Welcome to Rm. 224, 2019-2020!

Hello parents and students, welcome to another year at Hardisty School!  Special welcome to all of the new families who have joined Hardisty this school year!

I'm looking forward to my 4th year at Hardisty.  Since moving to Hardisty in 2015, I have thoroughly enjoyed being close to the school and watching my own children grow as students at the school.

We have an exciting September/October ahead of us with a week-long site-based experience called "City Hall School" for our students.  This will bring the students out of their desks and room to one of the "Inquiring Minds" schools in Edmonton.  I have long been a supporter and participant of Inquiry Based Learning, this being my 13th site-based experience.

Please browse this blog, with links along the side.  See you soon!

Do schools kill creativity?

Sir Ken Robinson is a world-known speaker on education.  He presents with humour about 19th century traditional teaching and learning.

"Creativity should be treated equal to literacy."

"We have made education systems where mistakes are the worst things you can make."

About Me

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Born and raised in the "City of Champions", I Michael Lastiwka am the proud husband to Lana, father to Ruby 9, and Jack 11. I love hockey, music, the outdoors, golf, and pretty much anything that gets me outside. I play guitar with Uptown, a cover band. Check out our tunes at www.uptown780.com. I am in my 20th! year of teaching with Edmonton Public Schools, 3rd year at Hardisty, 8 previously at Bisset in Mill Woods, and 9 at Patricia Heights School in West Edmonton. I grew up in Edmonton, have lived in many parts of the city including Northmount, Blue Quill, Riverdale, downtown, Terra Losa, Terwilligar Towne, and finally Fulton Place. Life unfolds in front of us each day and we need to grab on and make the most of it. I'm passionate about teaching and believe my students can accomplish anything they put their minds to.
